Kitchen And Bathrooms

Check all faucets for drips or leaks. Make repairs as needed to save water.

To prevent hair, soap and debris from clogging the drain lines, make sure all drains have strainer.

Inspect toilet tanks and bowls for cracks or slow leaks.

Add six drops of food coloring to your toilet tank to check for hidden leaks. If there's a problem, color will appear in the bowl within 30 minutes.

A properly flushing toilet needs no extra effort. If the handle must be held down for a full flush or jiggled to stop the water from running you may need to replace worn tank parts. Doing this, will help you save each month on your water bill.

Appliances

Check the temperature setting on the water heater. To prevent scalding and reduce energy use it should be set no higher than 120°F.

If your water heater is more than 15 years old, give some serious thought to replacing it before it wears out completely and causes possible water damage. Bonus point: Newer water heaters are more energy efficient and will save you money for years to come.

Check dishwasher, washing machine and ice maker supply hoses for bulges or leaks. Replace hoses that are older than 10 years or showing visible signs of weakness. When possible, use stainless steel hoses – they're more dependable and less likely to burst than other types.

General

Inspect exposed pipes under sinks and in the basement for signs of leaks.

If your home has a sump pump, make sure it functions properly by pouring a few buckets of water into the sump pit. A working pump will turn on quickly, discharge the water, and shut off without incident.

Check for slow water leaks in your home by taking a reading on your water meter before turning in for the evening. Without using any water over night, take another reading first thing in the morning. If you get a different reading, you most likely have a leak that should be repaired.

Outside

Before winter freeze sets in, be sure to remove your garden hose from the outside faucet to prevent water from freezing in the pipes connected to it inside your home. This could avoid burst pipes and water damage inside your home.

Inspect and clean out yard drains, gutters, and downspouts of any debris.

Check faucets and hose bibs to make sure water flows unobstructed. If an outdoor faucet drips or if there is leakage inside your home when the hose is turned on, you may have a cracked pipe that needs to be replaced.

Miscellaneous Tips

Dryer Vents - Check your lint trap after each load dried and, at least annually, clean the dryer vent that exhausts to the exterior of your home. Dryer fires, due to lint build-up, is one of the leading causes of home fires.
